What is a lameness score?
The score represents an average of three scores given by veterinarians who evaluated the lameness on a circle in both directions and in a straight line. A score of 9-10 represents a horse that does not show any signs of lameness under the conditions of the exam. A score of 7-8 represents a horse that shows signs of an inconsistent lameness (just an occasional step, but not every stride) during the exam. A score of 5-6 represents a horse that shows a consistent lameness during the exam but only while trotting. A score of 3-4 represents a horse that shows a consistent lameness while walking. A score of 1-2 is a horse that has difficulty standing on the leg.
